The Fortune Teller

The Fortune Teller is a small table that transforms familiar childhood iconography into furniture that packs into a flat, 2’x2’ square. Twenty plastic hinges snap together to connect the sixteen cardboard triangles that comprise the base, and a square cardboard tabletop slots onto the constructed pyramids with four plastic plugs. All of the triangles are machine cut with number-shaped holes matching each type of hinge, coded 1 through 6. These hinges also have clips fitted with number-shaped protrusions so they can slot into the cardboard without any screws, tools, or other hardware required. The result is a fully diagrammatic object decorated with glyphs that subvert the traditional furniture assembly process. The need for instructions is bypassed as the table becomes a manual for itself, and building it becomes a puzzle... just like an origami fortune teller.
